A former Blue Jays reliever went under the knife earlier this week.
Per The Athletic’s Dan Hayes, right-hander Jeff Hoffman underwent surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone chip and some debris in his throwing arm.
Dr. Jeffrey Dugas performed the arthroscopic surgery, and Hoffman’s current timeline has him slated to be ready for Opening Day, with the veteran hurler beginning to throw again in eight weeks if things are going well.
Hoffman signed a three-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2024/2025 offseason after two strong years in Philadelphia.
The right-hander posted a 4.37 ERA across 71 outings during his first year with the Jays, finishing a league high 59 games while also posting a 4.90 FIP. Despite a successful postseason, allowing just two earned runs across 12.1 innings of work, the right-hander allowed a pivotal solo shot to Miguel Rojas in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the World Series, which the Dodgers eventually won in extra innings.
In 2026, Hoffman found more success in the form of a 3.94 ERA and a 2.50 FIP but struggled in the closer’s spot, with manager John Schneider electing to put Louis Varland in the role.
At the trade deadline, the Jays dealt Hoffman plus cash considerations to the Twins in exchange for LHP Dasan Hill, 2B Dameury Pena, and RHP John Klein. Across 20 outings with the Twins, Hoffman posted a 2.50 ERA across 18 innings, allowing nine hits, 12 walks, and five earned runs while striking out 27 batters to the tune of a 2.43 FIP and a 1.167 WHIP.
