Former Blue Jay Derek Law designated for assignment

A former Toronto Blue Jays reliever is headed to the waiver wire.
On Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks designated right-hander Derek Law for assignment to make room for the return of pitcher Ryne Nelson.
Through seven games with the Diamondbacks this season, Law went 0-1 with a 1.00 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. The 36-year-old struck out five batters, walked two, and was hit at a .267 clip across nine innings of work.
The Diamondbacks invited Law to spring training as a non-roster player in February as he worked his way back from flexor surgery that he was forced to undergo in July of last season while a member of the Washington Nationals organization.
After missing much of the 2026 season, Law returned to the mound in Triple-A with the Reno Aces on August 12 before having his contract selected by the Diamondbacks on August 29.
Law’s lone season with the Blue Jays came during the 2019 campaign after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants as part of the return for outfielder Kevin Pillar. Through 58 games (four starts) with the Blue Jays, Law went 1-2 with a 4.90 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP across 60.2 innings pitched. Law struck out 67 batters during that span and allowed opponents to hit .256. Law elected free agency from the Blue Jays following that season and signed on with the Texas Rangers in January 2020.
While Law’s fastball is only averaging 93.6 MPH, down about two miles per hour from 2024, the righty has shown an ability to get outs and could contribute to the Blue Jays’ bullpen. With a struggling Michael Lorenzen and Spencer Arrighetti, the Blue Jays could opt to look outside the organization for help as they try to sneak their way into the postseason picture.
For his MLB career, Law has pitched in 329 games across nine clubs and is 23-18 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.
