Former Blue Jay Jesús Sánchez designated for assignment by Arizona Diamondbacks

Jesús Sánchez’s second stop of the 2026 MLB season didn’t last long. 
On Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks designated Sánchez for assignment after appearing in six games with the team. 
Through his six games since being claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks from the Toronto Blue Jays on September 14, Sánchez batted .133 with one walk and five strikeouts over 15 at-bats. Both of Sánchez’s hits were singles and the 28-year-old was only able to generate a .188 on-base percentage during his brief stint with the club. 
Originally acquired by the Blue Jays in February from the Houston Astros in exchange for Joey Loperfido, Sánchez largely disappointed during his time in Toronto. Over 99 games with the Blue Jays, Sánchez batted .260 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs. 
Expected to be a source of power in Toronto’s lineup, Sánchez failed to flash the ability he displayed in previous years, as the left-handed batter reached at least 13 home runs in each of the previous five seasons and reached a career-high 18 during the 2024 campaign with the Miami Marlins. 
After batting .329 during the month of May, Sánchez suffered a right ankle sprain on June 26 and upon returning, the outfielder struggled mightily. Sánchez went 11-for-54 (.203 average) with one home run and six RBIs over his final 26 games with the Blue Jays. 
To go along with these poor numbers, Sánchez’s defensive miscues in the outfield pushed him to the point of being a DH only, resulting in the Blue Jays cutting ties with a player well before they thought they’d have to.  
Sánchez made $6.8 million this season and was set to be arbitration eligible for the final time this offseason. Due to this year’s showing, it will be interesting to see which team takes a flier on Sánchez as they try to better unlock some of the tools he possesses. 
For his career, Sánchez has appeared in 685 games with the Marlins, Astros, Blue Jays and Diamondbacks and holds a career slash line of .241/.307/.417 with 81 home runs and 273 RBIs across 2,149 at-bats.
