Game two of three against the Oakland Athletics starts at 4:07 PM ET on Saturday.
This game will mark Spencer Horwitz’s 2024 debut, as he’s scheduled to bat in the two hole behind his former roommate, Davis Schneider.
The roster move to get the 26-year-old first baseman on the roster saw the Blue Jays designate fan-favourite Cavan Biggio for assignment, a sad end to his five-year tenure with the team.
With that being said, Horwitz does everything the Blue Jays need right now, except for hitting home runs. This season with Triple-A Buffalo, the 26-year-old is slashing .335/.456/.514 with four homers in 259 plate appearances, along with a 17 BB% and a 15.8 K%. His 22 doubles lead the International League by four.
In the big leagues, Horwitz never batted in the two hole aside from one game on September 9, 2023 against the Kansas City Royals.. He batted down in the lineup, usually fifth or lower, but did clean up twice.
Toronto hasn’t scored in the first inning in 29 consecutive games, just two more games away from matching the Major League Baseball record. That record is held by the 1937 Boston Bees, who went 31 straight games without scoring in the first inning. At this point, I want the Jays to blow past that record.
The Blue Jays will need to win this game to avoid losing their second consecutive series.
