The Toronto Blue Jays will look to bounce back against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday in Game 2 of their three-game set.
Back-to-back solo home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Justin Turner weren’t enough from the Blue Jays, falling 4-2 as Tyler Alexander — once again — shut Toronto’s bats down.
The Rays will send Zach Eflin and his 4.14 ERA to the mound, while the Jays will respond with Yariel Rodriguez, who is set to make his 10th start of the season. It’s been a season of highs and lows for YRod, having two great starts against the Rockies and Padres to open the year, then struggling against the Royals twice, and the Guardians. A back injury in the midst made things tough, but Rodriguez’ three starts in July have been strong so far.
He’s faced the Astros, holding them to two hits and one earned run across 6.2 innings, while shutting out the Mariners across six innings. He faltered a bit in his latest start against the Diamondbacks before the All-Star break, lasting just four innings, allowing two earned runs off four hits and three walks.
Still, it’s been more highs than lows for someone who the Jays will need in the rotation through the rest of the season.
