After a day off on Monday, the Toronto Blue Jays will be back in action as they open a two-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at the Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays and Phillies split their two-game set in Philadelphia back in May.
The Phillies lead the National League East with an 81-56 record and are in a tight race with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the NL. They rank sixth in baseball with 4.81 runs per game and they have the fourth-best ERA in the Majors at 3.67.
Chris Bassitt, who picked up Toronto’s win over Philly earlier this season, will take the mound for the Blue Jays. The right-hander held the Phillies to two runs on three hits and two walks over six-and-one-third innings in that start, outduelling Aaron Nola in the process. For the season, the 35-year-old has a 9-13 record and a 4.27 ERA.
Going for the Phillies will be rookie Tyler Phillips, who has a 4-1 record across seven appearances this season despite owning a 5.50 ERA. The 26-year-old right-hander threw a complete game shutout in just his fourth Major League outing against the Cleveland Guardians in July but struggled to a 13.91 ERA over three appearances in August. Phillips was demoted to Triple-A for a couple of starts and was brought back up when rosters expanded at the beginning of September.
