Chris Bassitt will lead the charge for the Blue Jays as they take on the New York Mets on Tuesday in Game 2 of their three-game series.
Monday’s Game 1 saw the Blue Jays roll with a bullpen day, giving Ryan Burr the first two innings, Luis Frias one and one-third innings, and Ryan Yarbrough in long relief. They held the Mets to just one hit, and an earned run, both off the latter of the three, before Tommy Nance gave up one earned and another unearned, costing them the game.
The bats struggled for the Jays, but they managed to score two in the bottom of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead, before Nance coughed up the game up.
Bassitt, meanwhile, will take the mound against his former team, having seen his game fall apart in the second half of the season. While he looked strong in the first half of the year, posting a 3.52 ERA, that’s plummeted to a 5.92 ERA in half as many games. He’s made one start against them since he left New York for Toronto, pitching seven and two-third innings in a June 2, 2023 game, allowing four hits, and no earned runs while fanning eight batters.
Maybe tonight is what’s needed to get him back on track.
