It’s a meeting of the birds. The Toronto Blue Jays will host the St. Louis Cardinals for a three-game series to wrap up this week’s homestand.

The Cardinals have rebounded from last year’s disastrous 71-win season but still aren’t in the conversation to make the playoffs. St. Louis is in third place in the National League Central with a 74-72 record, ten games back in the division race and six back of the third Wild Card spot.

The team’s pitching staff has been solid this season, as the Cardinals rank right around league average with a 4.12 ERA, but their offence sits 24th in baseball with 4.11 runs scored per game. Both Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt have seen a decline in production for the second consecutive season and young players such as Lard Nootbaar, Alec Burleson, and Brendan Donovon haven’t broken out like the team had hoped.

Starting for the Blue Jays will be Kevin Gausman, who’s been tagged with losses in back-to-back starts. He’s posted a 4.09 ERA over 163 innings for Toronto this year despite a rushed, injury-riddled start to the season. Going for the Cardinals will be trade deadline acquisition Erick Fedde. The right-hander who escaped the disaster known as the Chicago White Sox has a 3.39 ERA over 28 starts this season, including a 4.30 ERA in seven with St. Louis.
