GDB 162.0: Blue Jays wrap up 2024 season looking to avoid sweep

We’ve reached the end of the 2024 Major League Baseball season and there’s nothing left for the Toronto Blue Jays to play for other than avoiding being swept by the lowly Miami Marlins to close things out. The Blue Jays are dead last in the American League East with a 74-87 record and the Marlins are one of the six teams in baseball who are worse than them at 61-100.
The most interesting thing to watch for from the home team’s perspective in this Sunday afternoon season finale is Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s pursuit of a milestone. Vladdy is only one hit away from becoming the sixth Blue Jay ever to record 200 hits in a single season. Vernon Wells has the team record of 215 set in 2003, while Tony Fernandez (213 in 1986), Paul Molitor (211 in 1993), Shannon Stewart (202 in 2001), and John Olerud (200 in 1993) have also reached the mark.
The Blue Jays will send Ryan Burr to the mound as the opener in front of Ryan Yarborough, who’s expected to throw multiple innings as the bulk pitcher. The last time the duo made a piggyback start, they combined to throw five-and-one-thirds innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out eight batters.
