GDB 45.0: Blue Jays look to avoid sweep with Alek Manoah on the mound

This has been an ugly series for the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Friday, Rays starter Tyler Alexander carried a perfect game through seven innings and Toronto’s late-game comeback attempt was killed when George Springer grounded into a double play. On Saturday, general manager Ross Atkins spoke to the media about urgency and the Blue Jays came out and blew a 4-0 lead in a 5-4 loss.
On Sunday, Alek Manoah will take the mound as the Blue Jays look to avoid being swept by their middling division rival. The big righty allowed six earned runs in four innings against the Washington Nationals in his 2024 big-league debut and followed that up with arguably his best pitching performance in over a year.
Against the Minnesota Twins, Manoah went seven innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The bats gave him nothing, so Manoah was tagged with the loss.
Going for the Rays will be struggling right-hander Aaron Civale. Acquired from the Cleveland Guardians ahead of last season’s trade deadline, Civale hasn’t been as advertised since arriving in Tampa. Across 19 starts for the Rays in 2023 and 2024, he owns a 5.60 ERA, a significant drop from the 3.77 ERA he posted over five years in Cleveland.
He started off this season well but has struggled mightily as of late. Civale held the Blue Jays to one run over six innings in his first start of the season back in late March but he has an 8.87 ERA over his last five outings and has cleared through five innings just once in that stretch.
