GDB 60.0: Trevor Richards will open the game for the Blue Jays

Would you look at that, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is returning to third base.

Two days after his first start at the hot corner in 1,710 days, the Blue Jays slugging corner infielder will return to third base in Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Statistically, it wasn’t a bad game for Guerrero Jr. at the position, as he had 1 Defensive Runs Saved in eight innings at third, and even made a great play from the hole to retire a runner. He looked a lot better there than he did in 2019.

If the Jays continue to play Guerrero Jr. at third base, what’s stopping them from calling up Spencer Horwitz? The 26-year-old first baseman is slashing .332/.451/.500 with four homers in 246 plate appearances. On top of that, his 20 doubles lead the International League, while he has a higher BB% (16.7%) than K% (15.4%). Not really much else to do for him at the level.

Another interesting note is that the 2024 Blue Jays will have an opener in this game. Trevor Ricahrds, who has really been lights out since the Jays acquired him in the Rowdy Tellez trade in 2021, will start the game. Last season in three starts, Richards had a 3 ERA and a 4.03 FIP in nine innings pitched, striking out 40% of batters and walking just 8.6% of them.

Moreover, Bowden Francis, who was acquired in the same trade, was activated off the 15-day Injured List.
