It was a night to forget for Canadian sports fans – the Edmonton Oilers lost game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals and the Toronto Blue Jays dropped another game, making it seven in a row as the club could not hold onto a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
The bullpen once again let the club down and a defensive miscue between Addison Barger and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, as well as Spencer Horwitz in the ninth inning, allowed the Red Sox to claw their way back into the game and steal a much-needed victory for the Blue Jays. Toronto has been reeling since facing Cleveland back at the Rogers Centre and the club hasn’t won since that Sunday, dropping series against Boston and Cleveland before this latest road set on the East Coast.
On a brighter note, the offence put up six runs with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting a mammoth shot over the monster that travelled 471 feet, scoring three runs. The top four hitters in the lineup collected hits on the day while Alejandro Kirk and Kevin Kiermaier added to the fun. Starter Chris Bassitt was stellar once again, allowing just five hits and two earned runs through seven innings before the relief corps dropped the ball.
Kevin Gausman is heading to the mound tonight for the Blue Jays, who last faced Boston back on June 19th and allowed four runs and three walks through 5 2/3 innings, earning the loss on the day. It was not his sharpest outing but the right-hander is trending in the right direction as of late, posting a 3.65 ERA through his last seven outings.
Opposite Gausman on the mound is Brayan Bello, who also last pitched on June 19th and he posted a strong start of his own – going seven innings while allowing just two earned runs compared to six strikeouts.
For the Blue Jays, the club will be getting back Bo Bichette today, who returns from the IL after suffering a right calf injury. Steward Berrora returns to triple-A as the corresponding move. Daulton Varsho remains out of the lineup while Barger moves to left field, shifting Kiner-Falefa to third base while Davis Schneider gets the day off.
