The Blue Jays got another intriguing prospect prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline.
On Tuesday, they moved Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Charles McAdoo.
The 22-year-old third baseman/outfielder was selected in the 13th-round of the 2023 draft from San Jose State University. Spending three seasons at the Mountain West Conference school, McAdoo slashed .325/.396/.572 with 24 home runs in 578 plate appearances, along with 54 walks and 83 strikeouts.
McAdoo played with the Pittsburgh Pirates’s Single-A team after the draft, slashing .302/.412/.510 with five homers in 114 plate appearances for a 151 wRC+. Moreover, he walked 14.9% of the time while striking out 19.3% of the time.
The 22-year-old started the 2024 season with the Pirates’ High-A team, and slashed .336/.415/.561 with nine home runs in 258 plate appearances, along with a 10.5 BB% and a 21.7 K% for a 169 wRC+. Of course, he earned a promotion to Double-A, where he slashed .269/.347/.490 with five home runs in 118 plate appearances, with an 11 BB% and a 24.6 K% for a 134 wRC+.
Charles says goodbye to that baseball!
Combining the two levels, McAdoo is slashing .315/.394/.538 with 14 home runs in 376 plate appearances, along with a 10.6 BB% and a 22.6 K% for a 158 wRC+. That wRC+ would be tied with Spencer Horwitz for second in the organization (minimum 100 plate appearances) behind Dominican Summer League prospect Randy Soto.
Prior to the start of the season, McAdoo ranked as the Pirates’ 29th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline, but he was set to move up drastically. Jonathan Mayo from MLB.com noted he was going to jump into the top 15, while Baseball America had him 12th in their mid-season ranking.
This is a good return for the Blue Jays. McAdoo ranked 12th in Baseball America's updated Top 30. One of the team's faster risers this year. baseballamerica.com/teams/2016-pit…
Double-A OF Charles McAdoo (No. 29 Pirates prospect, per @MLBPipeline) is going back to Toronto for Kiner-Falefa, per source.
His preseason MLB Pipeline bio reports that he has a good feel for hitting and can do damage with the bat. Velocity doesn’t bother him, but he also has a good approach at the plate and limits the chase, despite the power numbers. Defensively, it’s believed he can stay in the infield as he has a strong arm, but has played 14 games in right field this season.
Overall, this was a pretty solid deal for the Jays, signing a utility player and getting an intriguing prospect back. It’s likely McAdoo will start his Blue Jays’ career in Double-A.
