Bird put up a good showing with the Blue Jays in Grapefruit play, so it wouldn&#8217;t be shocking if somebody else inked him to a big-league deal. He went 6-for-23 with two homers along with five walks and five strikeouts.
If he doesn&#8217;t find a contract elsewhere, Bird could still return to the Blue Jays on another minor-league deal.
Following the Matt Chapman trade, the Blue Jays had two open 40-man roster spots. One was used on David Phelps and it was assumed that the other would be used on Bird so that the Blue Jays could add a powerful left-handed bat to their bench.
Other non-roster invitees who could be in the mix to be added to the 40-man are Nathan Lukes, a lefty outfielder who has mashed during Grapefruit play, Gosuke Katoh, an infielder with more positional versatility, or Dexter Fowler, a veteran outfielder who just recently joined the Blue Jays in Dunedin on a minor-league deal.
