Hyun Jin Ryu continues to trend in the right direction.

He put together the longest start of his rehab assignment on Friday evening, scattering two earned runs over six innings of work for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Ryu threw 85 pitches, 58 of them for strikes, and struck out five batters while walking only one. The two earned runs were a pair of solo homers in the fifth inning that might not have made it over the fence in a standard big-league park. His fastball topped out at 90.8 miles per hour and sat at an average of 88.4 throughout the start.

Ryu started his rehab assignment with a three-inning start in the Florida Complex League and bumped up to four innings in his next outing with the Low-A Dunedin Blue Jays. After that, he moved up to Triple-A and tossed five innings for the Bisons. This start was his second with Buffalo and he progressed to six innings pitched.

Over those four rehab starts all told, Ryu has scattered four earned runs over 18 innings of work while striking out 16 batters and walking just one. There isn’t anything left for him to prove in the minor leagues, but the Blue Jays will see how his body responds to having thrown his longest start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June.

Players have 30 days in the minors after they begin a rehab assignment before they need to be added to the team’s Major League roster. Ryu made his first rehab start with the FCL Blue Jays on July 4 so his 30-day rehab stint comes to an end on August 3.
