The Toronto Blue Jays’ late comeback fell just short.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays played the rubber match against the Milwaukee Brewers, falling 5-4 to bring their season record to 33-35.
Surprise, the Blue Jays scored a first inning run thanks to Davis Schneider’s eighth home run of the season. This snapped an 0-18 streak, and hitting in the two hole may be Schneider’s ideal destination with Spencer Horwitz on the roster.

The score remained 1-0 for a while until the bottom of the six, the inning after starter Chris Bassitt left the game. Zach Pop recorded the first two outs, but walked Blake Perkins before Brice Turang hit a single. The Brewers tied it with a double stolen base in which Alejandro Kirk had an error that allowed Turang to head to third.

He was cashed in by William Contreras who hit a single and stole second, before Christian Yelich drove him in. The Brewers capped off the inning thanks to a Willy Adames home run to make it a 5-1 game.

It looked as if the Brewers were going to cruise to a 5-1 win, but Ernie Clement led off the top of the ninth with a double, Horwitz, Schneider, and Bo Bichette each singled to make it 5-3, before Danny Jansen walked to load the bases.

Sadly, George Springer struck out on three pitches which in the end screwed the Jays, because both Kirk and a pinch hitting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made good contact. Kirk’s good contact was a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4, and while Guerrero Jr. hit it deep enough to score a run, he was the third out.

<h2>Things worth mentioning…</h2>
Chris Bassitt had a good start, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing five hits, four walks, and striking out five to bring his season ERA to 3.56. A lot of traffic like Yusei Kikuchi the night before, but he did his job.
Trevor Richards had a much better outing than Tuesday, striking out the side to bring his season ERA to 3.31. He’s a much better low-leverage pitcher who can give up multiple innings than he is a high-leverage pitcher.
The three roommates all had two hits, Horwitz had two singles, Schneider had a home run and a single, and Ernie Clement had a double and a single. The other player with a hit was Bo Bichette.
Toronto can’t seem to get to .500, falling just shy of reaching the mark once again. On top of that, this was their first series loss since their series against the Detroit Tigers from May 23 to May 26.
Up next: The Blue Jays lost their series against the National League Central-leading team. On Friday, they’ll start a series against the American League Central-leading Cleveland Guardians in a three-game series at Rogers Centre. Kevin Gausman will get the ball for game 1 against a to-be-determined starter for the Guardians.
