Saturday’s game didn’t go great.

Despite looking as if the Toronto Blue Jays would coast to a win against the New York Mets, it wasn’t to be as the Jays blew a 2-0 lead and were walked off for the 3-2 loss. Let’s take a look at what happened in the game.

After Alan Roden and Bo Bichette with singles to kick off the fifth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in the former with an RBI single to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. However, the Jays struck out twice with the bases loaded to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, Will Wagner and Myles Straw both grounded out, bringing Roden to the plate. For the second time in as many innings, he got on base with a hit, this time a double. The next batter up, Bichette, hit a double to his pull side to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the Mets crawled back into the game in the bottom of the eighth. Left-handed reliever Brendon Little came into the game, walking Francisco Lindor on four pitches. Juan Soto followed with a walk, but Little got the next two batters out. The lefty was unable to get Jesse Winker out though, as he hit his second triple of the game to tie the game.

Nick Sandlin started the bottom of the ninth, getting the first out via a ground ball. It went downhill from there though, as Jose Siri drew a walk and advanced to second base with a wild pitch. Luis Torrens hit a single to put runners on the corners before Francisco Lindor drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly.

<h2>Takeaways…</h2>
On the Mets’ game-tying hit, George Springer crashed into the outfield wall and was noticeably injured. After throwing the ball to the cut-off man, he stayed on his knees for a few moments before eventually being pulled from the game. If Springer is out for any period of time, this is a sizeable loss for the Jays, given how well he’s started the season. Hopefully it’s nothing serious.

Chris Bassitt had a terrific outing, which is the norm for him against his former team. On Saturday, pitched 6.2 innings with four hits allowed and struck out nine. Since joining the Jays, he’s faced the Mets three times now, pitching 20.1 innings with one earned run, 13 hits, one walk, and 25 strikeouts.
The bullpen deployment wasn’t great. Bassitt was rolling and under 100 pitches when he was yanked for Yimi García. The reliever didn’t have a great third of an inning, but he got out of it without giving up a run. Brendon Little didn’t have a great game (it should’ve been García in this spot), and neither did Nick Sandlin. Realistically, Hoffman should’ve been out to start the ninth.
Bo Bichette is the only player at the top of the Blue Jays’ lineup who has seen any form of production so far this season. Saturday’s game saw Bichette go 3-5 with an RBI double. Good stuff, but hopefully he starts hitting home runs soon.
Alan Roden had his best game yet in the big leagues, hitting a double, a single, and walking once. His lone time not reaching saw the umpire expand his zone wide on a pitch that was clearly out of the zone. It may be time to move Roden up in the lineup.
Speaking of the umpires, that was a rough one for the home plate umpire. When both teams are upset about your strike calling, you are part of the problem. Really wide zone, and some of his strike three calls had an impact.

Hitting with runners in scoring position wasn’t great for the Jays on Saturday. Overall, they went 2-10, but they had so many chances to string together a big inning and just failed to do so, including in the top of the ninth. It bit them in the butt in the end.
The Jays look to salvage the series and avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1:40 PM ET. Bowden Francis is expected to start for the Jays, while David Peterson will start for the Mets. Last time Francis started against the Mets, he carried a no-hitter into the top of the ninth.
