July 24 Gameday: Trey Yesavage gets ball for the first of three games against Red Sox

After losing the first three of a four-game set to the Tampa Bay Rays at home, the Toronto Blue Jays managed to salvage the final game, winning 3-1. Though this sole victory doesn’t change their outlook come the trade deadline, it at least stopped the bleeding, preventing a five-game losing streak.

The Jays scored all three of their runs Thursday afternoon via singles, with Alejandro Kirk, George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. all collecting RBIs. The offence continued its overall lacklustre performance, now having scored more than three runs in a game just once since the All-Star break, in a 12-4 defeat to the Chicago White Sox. It took a masterclass from Shane Bieber to keep the Rays at bay and give Toronto a chance to win. The right-hander was nearly unhittable for his second consecutive start, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, striking out three and walking none. Should the Blue Jays be sellers at this year’s trade deadline, Bieber’s improved performance will certainly fetch a valuable return.

Tyler Rogers worked a clean eighth inning, needing just nine pitches, and Louis Varland picked up his 21st save of the season, lowering his ERA to 1.04.

The Jays‘ record is still far from pretty, currently sitting nine games under .500 at 47-56, good for last in the American League East, and six games back of the final Wild Card spot. With nine games left until the deadline, they would need to pull off a miracle to give the front office any reason to be buyers come August 3.

Trey Yesavage gets the ball in the first of three with the Boston Red Sox, coming off a much-improved outing at home against the White Sox last weekend in which he threw six innings, allowing three runs on nine strikeouts. It was a great step in the right direction for the right-hander, who had previously walked seven batters in San Diego through just 1.2 innings. Yesavage had one of his best starts this year in Boston back in June, tossing a season-high 7.1 innings, allowing just three runs. Though he’ll look to build upon prior success, he’s facing a much different Red Sox team that just pulled off a 15-game winning streak.

On the other hand, Patrick Sandoval gets the ball for Boston, making just his third start of the season. The southpaw underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2024, and after missing more than two calendar years, made his Red Sox debut in early July, going 4.1 innings and allowing just one run to the White Sox. In his second outing, however, he ran into the AL East-leading Rays and coughed up four runs over five innings of work. Overall on the year, he boasts a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings, walking two and striking out 10.

The Blue Jays’ lineup features eight right-handed hitters with Ernie Clement batting leadoff, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. batting second, Kazuma Okamoto batting third, George Springer batting cleanup, Luis Urías batting eighth, and Myles Straw batting ninth. Daulton Varsho is the only lefty in the lineup, batting seventh.

Davis Schneider will bat sixth, having had great success in the past at Fenway, with Alejandro Kirk behind the dish for Trey Yesavage.
