Could the Baby Jays be coming to an end soon?

On Wednesday, Cavan Biggio, who had recently been designated for assignment, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league reliever Braydon Fisher.
Well, The Athletics’ Ken Rosenthal said in an interview with Foul Territory that “this could be the start of the end” for the Baby Jays, referring to Biggio, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette.

Admittedly, the Baby Jays, who played for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2018, is what got me into watching prospects and eventually writing about prospects. However, Biggio isn’t and was never in the same category as Bichette and Guerrero Jr., as the latter two were seen as franchise players, while Biggio was a solid second basemen who could lead off an inning with a walk.
After two great seasons with the Jays in 2019 and 2020, Biggio has been a solid utility player since the start of 2021, slashing .219/.327/.351 with 24 homers in 1066 plate appearances for a 94 wRC+. On top of being a slightly-below-average hitter, Biggio has the ability to play third base, second base, first base, and the outfield.
Although the bat had been weak in 2024 for the Jays, slashing .200/.323/.291 with two homers in 131 plate appearances for a 88 wRC+, he had accumulated 0.5 fWAR, a solid total.

With that being said, if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette were traded, it’d be for completely different reasons than why Biggio was traded. Biggio was moved because with Spencer Horwitz’s arrival, he’d have next to no playing time.  Whereas if Guerrero Jr. and Bichette were traded, it be the sign that the team is rebuilding. Here&#8217;s what Rosenthal said:
<blockquote>“At some point, if this season doesn’t turn around, they’re going to at least need to listen at the deadline. I don’t know if it needs to happen then, but at some point [the Baby Jays] are going to end if they don’t start getting their acts together.”</blockquote>
Guerrero Jr. has been the better of the two superstar players, slashing .281/.370/.408 with seven homers in 297 plate appearances for a 1 fWAR. Sadly, the lack of home runs has continued to plague Guerrero Jr., but his 128 wRC+ is an improvement over last season’s 118 wRC+.
Bichette, on the other hand, has had a rough season with the Jays. This season, he’s slashing .240/.287/.346 with four homers in 272 plate appearances, along with a 5.1 BB% and a 16.2 K% for an 82 wRC+. His 82 wRC+ is on pace to be the worst in his career, while his 0.4 fWAR is not encouraging for a player who has been around 4 or 5 fWAR for his career.
At some point, the Blue Jays will need to make a decision: “Are these two players going to help us contend for a championship”. If the answer is no, it would be wise to trade them at this season’s deadline to get the most amount of value for them.
