The Blue Jays have signed an interesting pitcher.

On January 16, Bob Nightengale of USA Today announced that the Blue Jays have signed Alan Zhang Carter, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher.

The Singapore-born pitcher went undrafted and spent five seasons pitching in the NCAA, posting a 3.94 ERA in 82.1, only starting 10 of the 42 games he appeared in from 2018-2022. On top of that, he had an impressive 34.7 K% and an 11.8 BB% in the five seasons he pitched.
Carter pitched in the World Baseball Classic with Team China, where he had an 8.31 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched, along with five strikeouts and three walks. This gave him an opportunity to play in affiliate ball, as he signed with the Los Angeles Angels for the 2023 season.
He had success pitching in relief for their Single-A team, posting a 1.77 ERA and a 2.58 FIP in 20.1 innings pitched, along with a 36.8 K% and a 12.6 BB%. It’s worth noting that Carter, who was 25 years old at the time, was 3.1 years older than the average pitcher at this level.
Carter also pitched with the Angels Double-A team, where he had a 10.80 ERA and a 7.78 FIP in 8.1 innings pitched, with more walks (15.6 BB%) than strikeouts (13.3 K%) facing advanced batters.
Still, the right-handed pitcher is intriguing as the stuff is nasty. It’ll be interesting to see where he’ll start his season, as the Blue Jays may just see him as a depth signing for the moment. However, if he performs well at whatever level he ends up at, perhaps he’ll get a bigger role in the organization.
