It’s been a hot minute since the city of Toronto hosted an All-Star game. Well, that may all change, as Rogers Centre has undergone two different renovations in the past two seasons. 

On Monday’s home opening broadcast, Blue Jays’ president and CEO Mark Shapiro noted that Rob Manfred will be visiting the stadium at the end of the month, and he feels encouraged that the city could host an All-Star game in the next four or five years.

It makes sense, as the renovations cost approximately $300 million and over two years, with the Blue Jays going on two lengthy road trips to begin their 2023 and 2024 season. The renovations included numerous social spots in the outfield, raised bullpen, a smaller foul territory, all new premium seats in the 100 levels, and even cup holders!
The last and only time the city of Toronto hosted the All-Star game was all the way back in 1991, two years after the completion of construction on the then-named Skydome. In that game, the American League defeated the National League 4-2, with Baltimore Orioles’ legend Cal Ripken Jr. winning the MVP. Three Blue Jays made that roster, second baseman Roberto Alomar, outfielder Joe Carter, and starter Jimmy Key, with the pitcher picking up the win.
While Toronto hasn’t held a Major League Baseball All-Star game in over 30 years, the city held the National Hockey League All-Star game just two months ago. Superstar Auston Matthews captained one of the teams, with Greater Toronto Area generational talent Connor McDavid captaining one of the other teams.
The All-Star game coming to Toronto would be great for the city, the fans, and the players as there are a bunch of Blue Jays’ players that could get the nomination if the Jays re-sign Bo Bichette or Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Obviously nothing is set in stone, but turning the Rogers Centre from a stadium into a ballpark will have a ton of positive long-lasting effects for years to come.
