It looks like the Blue Jays will get a much-needed boost to their starting rotation this week.
Matt Shoemaker, who’s spent the past month on the Injured List, it apparently going to get the ball in the series opener against the Yankees on Monday.
This would have been Tanner Roark’s spot in the rotation but Charlie Montoyo said that the plan is to slide Shoemaker in and give some of “the other guys” an extra day of rest. I mean, given the way things have gone, I would rather just not have to see Roark face the Yankees again, but, alas.
Anyways, it’s great to see Shoemaker back in the mix. His last start came all the way back on Aug. 21 in Tampa Bay when he went five innings in a win against the Rays. He was pulled surprisingly early in that game and then ended up getting placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation.
Shoemaker has made five starts this season and owns a 4.91. It isn’t great, per se, but it’s better than the other options the team has right now. Tanner Roark and Chase Anderson have been beaten around and Robbie Ray and Ross Stripling have proven to not be effective for more than just a few innings.
If Shoemaker goes on Monday, he’ll also be scheduled to start one more time on the weekend against the Orioles, which would give the Blue Jays enough of a sample to decide whether or not he’s ready to potentially start a game in the playoffs.
