On Saturday morning, the Minnesota Twins announced they were designating Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment.
Woods Richardson, a former Toronto Blue Jays top prospect, really struggled through the opening two-plus months of the 2026 regular season. The 25-year-old appeared in 12 games (10 starts) and was 0-7 with a 7.74 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP over 47.2 innings pitched. The right-hander has been hit hard to this point, allowing an opposing average of .330.
The Blue Jays originally acquired Woods Richardson alongside Anthony Kay in exchange for right-hander Marcus Stroman before the 2019 MLB trade deadline. Woods Richardson went on to finish the 2019 season with Double-A New Hampshire, but would miss the 2020 season due to the COVID pandemic cancelling out the minor league season.
In 2021, Woods Richardson opened with the Fisher Cats but was once again moved alongside fellow top prospect Austin Martin in exchange for current Blue Jays’ starting pitcher José Berríos. At the time, Woods Richardson was listed as the Blue Jays’ fourth-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline.
Woods Richardson made his debut on October 2, 2022, with the Twins against the Detroit Tigers, a start in which he lasted five innings and allowed only three runs (two earned). Woods Richardson’s best season came in 2025, when he went 7-4 with a 4.04 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 23 games (22 starts) with the Twins.
For his MLB career, Woods Richardson has made 65 appearances (61 starts), and holds a 12-17 record, 4.76 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 301.1 innings pitched. Notably, the right-hander has struggled mightily against the Blue Jays throughout his career. Over four starts, Woods Richardson is 0-2 with a 10.26 ERA. Both of his losses came this season, the first being on April 10 at Rogers Centre, and the second coming at Target Field on May 1.
Once a highly regarded prospect, Woods Richardson can’t reject the assignment to the Twins Triple-A squad as he has less than three years of service time in the big leagues, should he clear through waivers unclaimed. The Twins may also release him or trade him to another team during that time. He is arbitration eligible in 2027.
