The Toronto Blue Jays affiliates continue to struggle.
On Sunday, four of the six affiliates were in action, as all four “A” affiliates played, while the two rookie league teams had the day off. Overall, the four teams combined for a 1-3 record, with the upper-minor teams continuing to struggle.
Let’s take a look at that in the latest Minor League Report!
Buffalo shutout again
Saying that the Buffalo Bisons have had a rough second-half would be an understatement. On Sunday, they fell 4-0 to the Scranton-Wilkes/Barre RailRiders to bring their second-half record to 6-15, the worst in the 20-team International League. In fact, it’s the worst in all of Triple-A baseball.
It was a quiet day for the bats, as the team mustered five singles. Riley Tirotta had a mutli-hit game, while Brian Serven, Cam Eden, and Alan Roden each had one hit. Gabriel Cancel, Tirotta, Rafael Lantigua, and Serven each had a walk. Eden also made a terrific catch in centre field, as he usually does.
Chad Dallas had an okay start, finishing with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K to bring his season ERA to 6.34. Overall, he’s been better since returning from injury. Zach Pop gave up a hit in a scoreless inning, while Eric Pardinho pitched two scoreless innings. José Cuas allowed an earned run, a walk, a hit, and struck out a batter in his inning of work.
New Hampshire are 2-8 in their last 10
Just like the Buffalo Bisons, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats have struggled mightily in the second-half, as they lost 3-0 to move their record to 4-15. Like the Bisons, their record is the worst in all of Double-A, including the two other leagues.
Despite the shutout loss, pitching wasn’t all that bad for the Fisher Cats, as Lazaro Estrada finished with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER (2 R), 1 BB, 4 K to bring his season ERA to 3.21. Juan Nunez had a rough day, giving up three walks and an earned run in an inning of work, but Anders Tolhurst and Justin Kelly each pitched a scoreless inning with a hit allowed.

The Fisher Cats had more hits than the Bisons on Sunday though. Josh Kasevich hit his 18th double of the season, while Michael Turconi, Alex De Jesus, Rainer Nuñez, Devonte Brown, and Andrés Sosa each had a single, while Gabriel Martinez had two singles.
Vancouver won to avoid being swept
The Vancouver Canadians, on the other hand, have been great in the second-half. On Sunday, they avoided being swept by Spokane, as they defeated the Northwest League leaders 7-6 in walk-off fashion to bring their second-half record to 17-7.
Although they finished with fewer hits than the Fisher Cats, they hit numerous extra-base hits. Robert Brooks hit his fourth home run of the season, giving the Canadians a 5-1 lead at the time while also hitting his fourth double. Nick Goodwin hit his 10th double, while the returning Brennan Orf hit his fourth double of the year to walk the game off.

Other players with a hit were Jace Bohrofen (who walked three times) and Peyton Williams. Goodwin walked twice, as did Estiven Machado.
Carson Pierce made the start for the Canadians, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K to bring his season ERA in High-A to 3.25. Kai Peterson still hasn’t allowed an earned run with Vancouver, as he struck out a batter in two innings of work. Conor Larkin had a rare bad outing, giving up three earned runs in an inning and a third.
Grayson Thurman gave up two earned runs in a third of an inning for his fifth blown save of the season. Johnathan Lavallee pitched an inning and a third with a walk and a hit, but picked up his third win of the season.
Dunedin couldn’t overcome an early deficit
The Dunedin Blue Jays aren’t struggling like the Buffalo Bisons or the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, but they also aren’t dominating like the Vancouver Canadians. On Sunday, they lost 7-5 to bring their second-half record to 12-10, three games behind the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels for the division lead.
Arjun Nimmala has been a totally different player since he was demoted to the Florida Complex League (and his eventual return to Single-A). On Sunday, he hit his seventh home run in Single-A. The rehabbing Luis De Los Santos also hit a home run, while also hitting a triple, while Canadian Nicolas Deschamps hit his fourth double of the season. Victor Arias had two singles, while Yhoangel Aponte had one single.

Gage Stanifer made the start and had a rough one, as he pitched an inning and two thirds while giving up six earned runs. By the end of the second inning, the D-Jays were in a 6-0 hole. Juanmi Vasquez pitched an inning and a third with three hits allowed, but no earned runs against.
Irv Carter continued to have a good season pitching out of the bullpen, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, while Eliander Alcalde pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Nate Garkow pitched an inning and gave up an earned run, but struck out two.
