The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking for their seventh win in their last eight games when they continue their series with the Tigers in Detroit on Friday night.
Toronto is an impressive 6-1 since the All-Star break following an 11-4 thumping of the Tigers on Thursday night.
Detroit is in an absolute free fall right now, with just one win in its last 11 games. However, the Tigers still hold a comfortable eight-game lead in the AL Central.
Let’s take a closer look at the odds for Friday’s clash between the Blue Jays and Tigers courtesy of bet365.

About the Blue Jays (61-42 SU, 62-41 ATS, 54-46-3 o/u)
Toronto’s unsung heroes continue to produce and propel the team to victories. Nathan Lukes, Joey Loperfido, and Ernie Clement all homered Thursday as the Blue Jays piled 11 runs on 15 hits on the Tigers.
The Blue Jays actually trailed 1-0 in Thursday’s game until the top of the sixth inning, when they erupted for five runs. They followed that up with a four-run barrage in the seventh to put the game away.
Perhaps more importantly, starting pitcher Eric Lauer gave them eight innings of one-run ball, preserving the bullpen heading into action on Friday.
About the Tigers (60-44 SU, 51-53 ATS, 52-48-4 o/u)
The Tigers had scored two runs or fewer in five of their last six games heading into Thursday, and they were held to a single run by Lauer and the Blue Jays until the ninth inning, when they put three runs up on the board in garbage time with the game well out of hand. With a storm quickly approaching the Detroit area, Toronto reliever Chad Green wasn’t wasting any time attacking hitters in the ninth inning as he tried to wrap up the game before the rain arrived, so don’t put too much stock into Detroit’s late offensive outburst.
With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Tigers may want to look at improving their struggling bullpen, which ranks 21st in the majors with a 4.13 ERA. Three Detroit relievers were rocked for six runs on 10 hits Thursday by the Blue Jays.
Probable starting pitchers
Toronto: RHP Jose Berrios (6-4, 3.87 ERA, 7.59 K/9)
Berrios has been shaky this month, allowing 15 earned runs over 19 innings for an ugly 7.11 ERA. He’s been touched up for four runs in back-to-back starts against the San Francisco Giants and Athletics, and he was bombed for six runs by the New York Yankees in early July. However, he’s been exceptional in night starts this season, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.65 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .208 batting average. Berrios tossed six innings of two-run ball in his only previous start against Detroit this season.
Detroit: RHP Keider Montero (4-2, 4.28 ERA, 6.49 K/9)
Montero doesn’t record many strikeouts, but he does a good job of limiting hard contact (80th percentile in hard-hit rate) with his rising fastball, slider, and sinker. He’s coming off a rough start against the Texas Rangers, who scored four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings off of him. The right-hander has only pitched beyond the sixth inning once this year, so don’t expect a lengthy outing from him. He has not pitched against Toronto this season.
Notable injuries
Outfielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring), outfielder Anthony Santander (shoulder), and infielder Andres Gimenez (ankle) are on the injured list for Toronto. Pitchers Bowden Francis (shoulder) and Yimi Garcia (ankle) are also out for the Blue Jays.
Pitchers Jackson Jobe (elbow), Alex Cobb (hip), Alex Lange (lat), and Jose Urquidy (elbow) are all on the injured list for Detroit. Outfielder Kerry Carpenter is also on the IL with a hamstring issue but is nearing a return over the next few days.
Weather
Forecasts are calling for temperatures around 27 C with a 60% chance of thunderstorms. Winds will blow in from left field at 6 mph.
Blue Jays vs Tigers betting trends
- The Blue Jays have hit the team total over in 32 of their last 48 games.
- The Blue Jays have the best record on the runline (62-41) in the majors this season.
- The Tigers have only covered the runline in 26 of their last 66 games.
Blue Jays vs. Tigers player prop trends
- Spencer Torkelson has hit safely in four straight games and 15 of his last 20. He’s -180 to get a hit.
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has recorded over 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs in five straight games and six of his last 10. He’s -140 to exceed that mark on Friday.
- George Springer has walked in four straight games and scored at least one run in five straight contests. He’s +175 to draw a walk and -115 to score a run.
Blue Jays vs. Tigers best bet
- Springer over 0.5 walks: +200 for one unit (best odds @ bet365). This isn’t a sexy market to bet into, but there’s a strong case to be made that the veteran outfielder will draw at least one walk in this contest at enticing +200 odds. Springer ranks in the 91st percentile with a 12.9% walk rate, and he’s drawn a free pass in 42% of his games this season, including in four straight. That means we’re getting great value in this case at +200 with 33.3% implied odds. Additionally, Springer has two home runs and a double in three career at-bats against Montero, which means the Tigers starter should be pitching to him very carefully on Friday, and that very well could lead to a free pass if the situation allows it. You could also back Springer in a few other offensive betting markets, such as total bases (around +100 to record over 1.5), hits (+160 to record over 1.5), or to homer (+475). He’s slashing a solid .352/.441/.591 with six homers and 19 RBIs over the last 30 days.
