About the Blue Jays (26-28 SU, 32-22 ATS, 25-28-1 o/u)
The Blue Jays went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners on Tuesday, as the team has now scored just four runs over its last five games while being shut out twice in that span.
The Blue Jays are averaging just 3.83 runs per game this season (25th in the majors), but that number falls to 3.08 runs per game on the road.
One player that isn’t struggling at the plate is Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who extended his on-base streak to 27 games with a fifth-inning walk on Tuesday. The streak is the longest of Vladdy’s career and the longest current streak in the majors.
About the Rangers (27-29 SU, 30-26 ATS, 17-38-1 o/u)
If you think Toronto’s offensive woes are bad, the Rangers are actually one of the few teams in worse shape. They’ve scored the fewest runs in the American League (185) and are averaging only 3.3 runs per game (27th in the majors) overall. Their .284 on-base percentage is also the worst in the majors.
However, this team is exceeding expectations from a pitching perspective. Rangers pitchers own a combined 3.25 ERA (fourth in baseball), and their starters own a sparkling 2.92 ERA (second in majors) across nearly 302 innings.
Probable starting pitchers
Toronto: RHP Paxton Schultz (0-0, 2.53 ERA, 10.97 K/9)
Schultz will be making his first career MLB start on Wednesday after making four relief appearances for Toronto earlier this season. He last took the ball on May 25 against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing four runs—none earned— on three hits while throwing 46 pitches over three innings of work. It’s probably realistic to project he’ll only throw around three innings in this matchup due to his moderate pitch count just three days ago.
Texas: RHP Tyler Mahle (5-2, 1.80 ERA, 6.45 K/9)
Mahle is in the midst of a breakout season. He’s allowed three earned runs or less in all 11 of his starts, and he’s been electric at Globe Life Field, posting a 4-1 record with a 0.95 ERA while holding opponents to a .165 batting average across seven outings. The 30-year-old hurler doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but opponents are hitting just .172 (.253 xBA) off his fastball despite it only averaging 92 mph due to its above-average movement.
Notable injuries
Pitchers Ryan Burr (shoulder), Erik Swanson (forearm), Nick Sandlin (lat), Yimi Garcia (shoulder), and Max Scherzer (thumb) are all on the injured list for the Blue Jays. Infielder Andres Gimenez (quad) and catcher Tyler Heineman (concussion) are also on the IL.
The Rangers are also missing some key players, with first baseman Joc Pederson (hand), outfielder Evan Carter (quad), shortstop Corey Seager (hamstring), pitcher Kumar Rocker (shoulder), and pitcher Jon Gray (wrist) all on the injured list. However, Seager is expected to be activated off the IL on Wednesday.
Weather
Forecasts are calling for temperatures around 23 C and a 40% chance of rain in Arlington. Bettors will have to wait and see closer to first pitch whether or not the retractable roof will be open.
Rangers vs. Blue Jays betting trends
- The Rangers have the best under record in the majors (38-17-1).
- The Blue Jays have hit the team total under in 13 of their last 17 road games.
- The Blue Jays have the best record on the runline in baseball (32-22).
Rangers vs. Blue Jays player prop trends
- Mahle has allowed five hits or less in 10 of his 11 starts this season and is -140 to do so again Wednesday. He’s also allowed under 2.5 earned runs in 10 of his 11 appearances and is -150 to hold the Blue Jays under that number.
- Wyatt Langford will take a five-game hitting streak into action Wednesday, and he’s recorded at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games. He’s -220 to extend the streak.
- Alejandro Kirk has singled in five straight games and in 60% of his contests this season. He’s -165 to extend that streak.
Rangers vs. Blue Jays best bet
- Rangers moneyline: -127 for one unit (best odds @ Pinnacle). The Rangers have the edge in the starting pitching matchup in this spot, and they should be inspired by the return of their superstar shortstop (Seager) to the lineup from injury. Despite their overall struggles, the Rangers are an impressive 18-11 straight up and 19-10 on the runline at home this season.
