The Toronto Blue Jays’ offence limped through the 2026 season, finishing with both the fewest runs and home runs in Major League Baseball.
While many of these struggles can be attributed to down seasons from many players up and down the lineup, Nathan Lukes was one of the few Blue Jays who put together quality at-bats on a consistent basis.
How the year went
The 2026 campaign couldn’t have started much worse for Lukes. Over his first 13 games, Lukes went 2-for-31 with only two RBIs, and looked like a shell of the player who had a breakout 2025 season, when he batted .255 with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs.
In mid-April, while the Blue Jays were in Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks, Lukes saw a specialist to help deal with vertigo symptoms that were giving him trouble. Immediately following the visit, Lukes caught fire, highlighted by going 11-for-21 over his next seven games with six RBIs.
Unfortunately for Lukes, on April 24 during an 8-6 loss against the Cleveland Guardians he suffered a left hamstring strain that forced him to the 15-day injured list the following day. Lukes returned to the Blue Jays’ lineup on May 25 and instantly produced a three-hit contest, but was dealt an injury scare when Miami Marlins left-hander Andrew Nardi hit him in the head with a 94.1 MPH sinker.
Speaking to the media after the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider touched on what it meant to have Lukes return from the IL.
“You know what you’re going to get,” Schneider said of Lukes’ offensive profile. “It’s very consistent, and we need to kind of stack those at-bats up in the lineup. Great to have him back, and to have that presence there.”
Lukes’ character and ability to bounce back were on full display during a series against the Kansas City Royals. In the series opener on August 25, Lukes was thrown out by Royals left fielder Isaac Collins trying to stretch a single into a double in the bottom of the ninth inning with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looming in the on-deck circle as the potential tying run.
After taking responsibility for his decision post-game, Lukes responded the following night by slugging a three-run home run off Randy Dobnak to propel the Blue Jays to a 3-0 victory.
“I guess you can’t screw up baserunning if you just hit the ball over the fence,” Lukes said, chuckling.
Where Lukes really thrived this season was in the outfield, particularly with his arm strength. Lukes turned in a perfect fielding percentage in right field and picked up 10 outfield assists on the season. Lukes’ arm strength was ranked as the most valuable in the American League according to Statcast’s arm value metric, and was a large part of him being nominated for his first Gold Glove award.
Across 125 games, Lukes batted .277 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. Lukes reached base at a .327 clip, and with many questions surrounding the Blue Jays’ outfield this winter, Lukes figures to play a role on the club in 2027.
