The recent reports over the past couple of weeks have seen Maroudis getting second opinions on his elbow/forearm area and it appears the final decision has been corrective surgery. It is not known at this time if it is full Tommy John surgery, the internal brace procedure, or another surgery (although this seems unlikely) but Maroudis was moved to the full-season injured list on May 22, so his season is done.
Drafted by the Blue Jays in the fourth round last season, Maroudis didn’t pitch following the draft and started the 2024 campaign in single-A Dunedin. A product of Calvary Christian High School, Maroudis spurned a commitment to NC State to sign with the Jays last summer. He was lauded for his improved fastball (which sits in the mid-90s) and his slider, which improved even more this past offseason after spending time at the Player Development Complex.
Fans got to see Maroudis pitch in the Spring Breakout against the Yankees prospects and the right-hander was outstanding through his first three professional outings before leaving with the injury. Through 10 2/3 innings, Maroudis allowed just three hits and one earned run while walking just four batters compared to 12 strikeouts.
He held opponents to a .088 batting average and just one extra-base hit (a double) while posting a 65% strike rate, limiting opposing batters to a .302 OPS through 38 batters. He used his slider and his fastball the most while mixing in a curveball and changeup on occasion, working more with his offspeed pitches out of the gate; hitting the low 80s with his slider and the mid-70s with his curveball.
Maroudis joins an unfortunate list of prospects within the Blue Jays system to go down with an injury. Top prospect Ricky Tiedemann has been dealing with inflammation in his UCL and hasn’t pitched since early April while southpaw Brandon Barriera has undergone internal brace surgery and is done for the season.
