The Toronto Blue Jays appear to be calling in some reinforcements from the minor leagues.
Per Mike Rodriguez with Rompiendo Sports, the Blue Jays are set to call up Eloy Jimenez from the Buffalo Bisons with DH George Springer likely landing on the IL later today.
Springer left yesterday’s ballgame with a fractured left toe, and after initial X-rays showed the fracture, the veteran was getting a CT scan for additional imaging to confirm the severity of the injury.
Jimenez signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays this past winter after a short stint with Toronto to finish the 2025 season in Buffalo. The right-handed hitter hasn’t appeared in a big league game since 2024, as injuries have kept the former White Sox top prospect on the sidelines for most of his career.
Across six seasons in the big leagues, Jimenez owns a .269/.318/.462 slash line with 95 home runs, 298 RBIs, and a .780 OPS with a 112 OPS+. He last suited up for the Baltimore Orioles two years ago, appearing in 33 games.
So far this season in Buffalo, Jimenez is off to a strong start.
Across 11 games and 35 at-bats, the Dominican product has nine hits (.257) and owns a .372 OBP, .371 SLG, and a .744 OPS with one double, one home run, and five RBIs. He’s also walked five times compared to nine strikeouts and has contributed four runs for the Bisons. This spring, Jimenez was making a strong case for a roster spot, posting a .286/.333/.524 slash line across 42 at-bats, adding four doubles and two home runs.
Jimenez is not on the 40-man roster, but the Jays have an open roster spot to add the slugger without needing to cut anyone loose. The Jays clubhouse will open shortly before today’s afternoon contest against the Twins, which will show whether the Dominican product has a spot in the locker room or not, with a Springer update likely to follow shortly this morning (although manager John Schneider does not do media availability before games on Sunday’s).
