According to Canadian Baseball Network journalist Danny Gallagher, right-handed reliever Zach Pop has found a new home on the West Coast, signing a deal with the Seattle Mariners. Gallagher reports that he has reported to the club’s Arizona complex and will continue to rehab back from an elbow injury he suffered this spring while still with the Jays. 24 teams reportedly reached out to Pop’s camp when he became a free agent after the Jays DFA’d him from the active roster, and he was later released.

The Brampton, Ontario, product joined Toronto alongside Anthony Bass at the 2022 trade deadline, with the Blue Jays sending former top prospect Jordan Groshans the other way.

Since then, Pop struggled to find a regular spot in the Jays’ bullpen, struggling mightily with his command at times while possessing a sinker with incredible horizontal movement when located well.

Through 90 outings and parts of three seasons, he authored a 4.89 ERA through 81 innings and allowed 74 hits, 44 earned runs, 27 walks, and struck out 58 batters while being optioned back and forth between triple-A and the big leagues. He appeared in a career-high 58 games last season once the Jays were out of the postseason race and spots in the relief corps opened up, tossing a 5.59 ERA with 19 walks.

His sinker was a groundball machine, ranking in the 93rd percentile last season while being able to flirt with triple digits, and he paired the offering with a slider and a cutter.

Pop joins a Seattle organization that boasts a ton of former Blue Jays, including Trent Thornton, Tayler Saucedo (minors), and Hagen Danner, who was just DFA’d and passed through waivers unclaimed.
