A former New York Yankees reliever is heading across town.
According to Joel Sherman at the New York Post, the New York Mets are in agreement with right-hander Luke Weaver on a two-year deal worth $22 million. Sherman reports that there are no opt-outs or deferrals to his deal and that it is still pending a physical.
A ten-year veteran, the Mets will be Weaver’s sixth team in the big leagues since being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014. A starter early in his career, Weaver moved to the bullpen full-time in 2024 while he was with the Yankees and became a go-to member of their bullpen.
Through the past two seasons, Weaver owns a 3.21 ERA across 148 2/3 innings with a 3.58 FIP and a 0.969 WHIP. He’s allowed 53 earned runs and 46 walks during that time while striking out 175 batters to the tune of a 10.6 K/9 with a 2.8 BB/9. Weaver also racked up 12 saves with the Yanks while being primarily used in a set-up/high-pressure situation capacity.
He was the Yankees’ closer late in 2024 when fellow reliever Clay Holmes was struggling to convert save opportunities and remained in the closer’s spot during the club’s 2024 postseason run.
Weaver dominated during the 2024 World Series run with New York, striking out four batters across five innings with just one hit allowed. This past postseason, Weaver struggled against the Blue Jays, allowing two hits and three earned runs with one walk across two outings and just 1/3 of an inning.
With this signing, Weaver becomes the second Yankees reliever to join the crosstown rivals, with Devin Williams signing a three-year, $51 million contract on December 3rd.
Per Sherman, the Yankees were not interested in re-signing Weaver and were not part of the pursuit of him this offseason.
