It looks as if the Toronto Blue Jays’ top prospect is on the path to returning.

Ricky Tiedemann last pitched for the Buffalo Bisons on April 11, before landing on the Injured List thanks to a left elbow injury. He made one rehab start on June 14, but it didn&#8217;t go great.
Well, Tiedemann made his second rehab start on Thursday, pitching two innings with four strikeouts. Overall, he finished with a line of 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, throwing 28 pitches, 20 of which were strikes.
In the first inning, he faced Cincinnati Red prospect Sammy Stafura, striking him out on six pitches, the last one coming with an 82.5 slider. After getting a fly out, Tiedemann struck out Ariel Almonte thanks to an 84.3 mph slider on five pitches.

The second inning started with back-to-back strikeouts. First up was Esmith Pineda, who lasted seven pitches before the slider once again got the strikeout, this one at 84.4 mph. Yerlin Confidan also struckout, getting caught looking at a 97 mph two-seamer, the fifth pitch of the at-bat. Tiedemann generated a ground out for the final out of his outing.
Diving deeper into the stats, Tiedemann averaged 97.2 mph with the fastball, maxing out at 98.2 mph. It generated two whiffs on six swings. The slider was easily his best pitch, getting two whiffs on four total swings, as four called strikes, two of them for strike three. The changeup was only thrown seven times, generating four total swings and no whiffs.

It’s been a rough season for Tiedemann. After finishing the 2023 season strong after a bicep injury, the 21-year-old was hit hard in his Triple-A tenure, owning a 5.63 ERA and a 10.40 FIP in eight innings pitched. On top of that, he had a 23.8 K%, well down from 2022 and 2023, while his BB% increased to 21.4%.
His first rehab outing didn’t go much better in the Florida Complex League, where he gave up three earned runs in a third of an inning pitched. However, the second outing is an encouraging sign, and hopefully he’ll be back in Buffalo and start dominating in no time.
