Seattle Mariners sign Simeon Woods Richardson to minor-league deal

A former Toronto Blue Jay will be joining his third organization of the season.
On Wednesday night, pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson signed a minor-league contract with the Seattle Mariners and was assigned to their Triple-A team, the Tacoma Rainiers.
Woods Richardson was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on August 28, following an outing in which the right-hander allowed six earned runs across one inning during a 13-2 loss against the Kansas City Royals.
After being outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on August 31, Woods Richardson elected free agency on Tuesday before coming to an agreement with the Mariners a day later.
Acquired by the Blue Jays from the Minnesota Twins on June 4 in exchange for cash considerations, Woods Richardson appeared in eight games following the trade and went 2-0 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Across 18.1 innings pitched, Woods Richardson struck out 14 batters and held opponents to a .222 average.
For the season between both the Blue Jays and Twins, the 25-year-old has pitched in 20 games and has gone 2-7 with a 6.68 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. Opponents have been able to hit .304 off Woods Richardson for the season, while he has struggled with walks, having issued 37 free passes in 66 innings.
A former No. 3-ranked prospect in the Blue Jays organization, Woods Richardson pitched in six games (five starts) in Triple-A with the Bisons this season and went 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.
While the Mariners’ rotation is pretty set, Woods Richardson could receive a shot working as a long man out of the bullpen as some of the lower-leverage arms have struggled at times throughout the season, giving the righty a shot to receive the call back to the majors if he pitches well in Tacoma.
