September 15 Gameday: Blue Jays turn to bullpen day looking to rebound against Tigers

The Toronto Blue Jays are in need of a bounce-back game.

Monday’s roller-coaster 6-5 loss against the Detroit Tigers dropped the Blue Jays to 75-76 through 151 games but they remain 1.0 game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the American League’s final Wild Card spot, due to Cleveland’s loss to the Chicago White Sox last night.

With 11 games remaining, the Blue Jays are in need of as many wins as possible as they try to secure their spot in the AL postseason picture for the second consecutive season.

Looking to get back into the win column, the Blue Jays will turn to Braydon Fisher as an opener for Tuesday’s contest. Fisher has pitched in 72 games (nine starts) this season – tied for fourth-most in MLB – and has gone 3-4 with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.

Through his 72 games, Fisher has thrown 72.2 innings, and during that span, the 26-year-old has struck out 72 batters and held opponents to a .206 average. In six of Fisher’s nine starts this year, he has thrown only one inning, while the other three have been 1.1 innings, so expect the Blue Jays to get into their bullpen quickly.

Spencer Miles last worked during Saturday’s 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and threw 44 pitches across his two innings of work. With two days off, Miles should be good to go, but it may only be as a leverage arm. Michael Lorenzen worked on Sunday and threw 15 pitches in the 8-1 victory, so he could be considered the bulk arm during tonight’s contest.

Countering the Blue Jays’ bullpen day for the Tigers is right-hander Drew Anderson. Through 47 games (nine starts) this season, Anderson is 4-6 with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Anderson has struck out 105 batters over his 97.0 innings of work and limited opponents to a .239 average.

For much of the season, Anderson worked out of the Tigers’ bullpen, but following the trades of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, the 32-year-old was shifted into the rotation. Since becoming a full-time starter, Anderson has pitched well, having gone 0-2 with a 2.97 ERA across his 33.1 innings pitched.

Back on May 15, when the Blue Jays were facing the Tigers at Comerica Park, Anderson turned in a pitching line of 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Anderson held the Blue Jays scoreless as the Tigers mounted a 3-2 comeback win, with the lone Blue Jays hit off him coming by way of a Brandon Valenzuela single.
