The Toronto Blue Jays may never lose a game again.
What a game it was on opening day Thursday as the Blue Jays buckled down and secured a 10-9 season-opening win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pitch clock be damned as this one took three hours and 38 minutes to complete, a new record in the pitch clock era, and a far cry from some of the other game times. The Rays and Tigers had the fastest game of the day at the time of writing at two hours and 14 minutes.
There are more than enough storyliens to come out of this game including George Springer going 4/5 scoring four runs, Nathan Lukes pinch-running and scoring, Bo Bichette forgetting how to play defence but going 4/6 at the plate, to questionable coaching moves and then some.
But on social media, it was great to be back in the Jays environment. Let’s take a look at some of the best tweets from the day.
Before the game even started, things were incredibly weird as Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright sung the American National Anthem? Honestly, should’ve been a sign of what was to come.
The Jays came out swinging early and new guy Daulton Varsho drove in the first run of the season on a double bringing home George Springer.
Alek Manoah, who had a tough day on the mound getting only 3.1 IP into the game, dropped his first K of the season in the form of a 95.4 MPH fastball.
This ones great. The Jays had a penchant today for just blooping balls behind the Cardinals. It felt like every time they were driving in runs it was off these types of plays, and we’ll take ’em.
So uh.. yeah. Tough day for John Schneider in terms of utilizing the bullpen, but hopefully that’s something he can shake off here. It was an issue for him last year and seems, at least for now, to be carrying over a big.
I think the biggest issue was pulling Erik Swanson in favour of Tim Mayza as he was throwing some good stuff. His 4-seam fastball was kissing 96 MPH and he struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Mayza, meanwhile, came in during the B6 replacing Swanson to face lefties Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbar. If Mayza, a lefty himself, could’ve struck the two out no problem! Instead, they both singles and Paul Goldschmidt drove in a run.
