Another day, another draftee has been signed.

It was announced late on Tuesday night by Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo that the Blue Jays have signed eighth-round selection Braden Barry to a bonus worth $147,500.

The outfielder played for West Virginia University in 2023, and slashed .290/.383/.511 with eight homers in 281 plate appearances. Moreover, he had an 11.7 BB% and a 19.6 K% in his junior year. For his entire collegiate career, he slashed .282/.371/.473 with 14 homers in 534 plate appearances. He had a 10.7 BB% and a 21.2 K%.
The 21-year-old right-handed batter also played three seasons of summer ball, slashing .231/.291/.282 with no homers in 86 plate appearances. Most recently, he played in the MLB Draft League, where he slashed .346/.370/.423 in 27 plate appearances.

Sadly, there isn’t a lot of information out there on Barry. However, his $147,500 bonus (which is essentially $150,000 due to a trick, even if it doesn’t count towards the bonus pool), is under the slot value for the 244th pick. The Blue Jays saved $47,100 by giving him this deal.
After this signing, they had a bonus pool of $1,047,132 remaining, with two more players to sign from rounds 1-10. Josh Mollerus eventually signed (we’ll get to that in a later article), while Jaroun Watts-Brown is the only player in those rounds yet to have signed. Depending on the bonus of Watts-Brown, this could give the Jays enough room to sign Sam Kulasingam.
