Once again, the Blue Jays will select with the 20th overall pick. They were originally slated by several publications to select 22nd overall, but the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees went over the Luxury Tax penalty resulting in their pick dropping 10 spots.

This is the second straight season the Blue Jays will pick 20th overall. In the 2023 draft, they selected high school shortstop Arjun Nimmala, who was ranked as around the 10th best prospect by many scouts.
Not only did the Jays select a talent that was better than where they were picked, but they also gave him a $3,000,000 deal, far less than the $3,750,000 value for this pick. As you can imagine, they used those savings elsewhere on a bunch more players that were picked lower than where scouts had them.

Had the Jays picked 22nd, the value of the signing bonus at that pick is $3,500,000, meaning that they’ll get an additional $250,000 to sign players, which always will become important in the later rounds.
Not just that, but the Jays will get a fourth-round pick whenever Matt Chapman signs, which has a value anywhere between $500,000 to $450,000. Of course, if they sign a player with a qualifying offer such as Shohei Ohtani, they’ll lose their second-round pick and the bonus pool that comes with it, but you take that trade any day of the week.
Elsewhere, the Cleveland Guardians won the lottery with a 2% chance of doing so, meaning they’ll get the first overall pick. The Cincinnati Reds will pick second, even though they had an even smaller 0.9% chance of winning it all. The Boston Red Sox have the highest pick in the American League East at the 12th, while the Rays have the 18th, Orioles have the 22nd, Yankees have the 25th.
We are still well away from the draft in July, but it’s exciting nonetheless!
