Why do the Cardinals do the things that they do? I have no idea.

On Monday morning, the red bird team designated left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera for assignment, a 26-year-old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Could the blue bird team have interest in him? Hopefully the orange bird team doesn’t get him.
Other than a cool name, what makes the 26-year-old lefty intriguing? Thus season, he has posted a 5.06 ERA and a 5.03 FIP in 32 innings pitched, along with a 26.6 K% (a career-high) and a 12.6 BB%.
His best season came in 2021, where he pitched 70 innings and had a 3.73 ERA and a 3.28 FIP, along with a 26 K% and a 12.2 BB%.

The Cardinals are not good this season. They currently have a 40-53 record, which is the worst in the National League Central Division. The red birds sit a game behind the Pirates some how and will more than likely be sellers this deadline.
Which makes the DFA of Cabrera even more confusing. The 26-year-old still has two more seasons of arbitration remaining, and won’t become a free agent until after the 2025 season. Furthermore, Fangraphs apparently notes that he has an option-year remaining, meaning that the Cardinals could have just optioned him if they didn’t want him to pitch for the big league team.
Cabrera was and still is a trade candidate, and I’m sure quite a few teams will be interested in making a move for the lefty, as he averaged mid-high 90s on his fastball (95.9 mph this season).
If the Jays were to get him, they’d likely have to trade for him and compete with several other teams. However, Cabrera would be an interesting reliever they could add, and potentially Mitch White could go the other way with some prospects.
