Heading into Thursday’s game, Bo Bichette was slated to be in the lineup, but was scratched before the game due to a right forearm contusion.
As you may recall, during his final plate appearance of Wednesday’s game, Bichette was hit by a 94.9 mph Rafael Montero sinker right in the arm. Unfortunately, it was on a 1-2 count and he went around, adding insult to literal injury.
Thursday’s game didn’t go much better, as Toronto went down 3-0 in the top of the first, before tying the game during their half-inning. That was all the runs they’d score though, as the Houston Astros would add two more in the game to win 5-3. The Blue Jays’ record fell to 39-48, with their nine games under .500 being the worst mark of the season.
Sadly, Bichette being in the lineup would likely not have helped the Jays. Since returning from a calf injury, Bichette is slashing .143/.242/.214 with two doubles in 33 plate appearances, while striking out 33.3% of the time to a 12.1 BB% for a 36 wRC+.
The 26-year-old’s season stats aren’t much better either. He’s slashing .228/.282/.330 with four homers in 309 plate appearances, along with a 6.1 BB% and a 17.8 K% for a 75 wRC+ and a 0.4 fWAR.
Of course, Bichette has had a cold start a season before, as he was a slightly above-average hitter in 2022 until the final five or six weeks, finishing the season with a slash line of .290/.333/.469 with 24 home runs in 697 plate appearances for a 130 wRC+. Hopefully, the same can happen soon, because the Jays really need him.
The cursed season has continued, as the Blue Jays have been plagued by injuries. It hasn’t really been felt for position players, as Isiah Kiner-Falefa is the only position player on the Injured List thanks to a knee injury. However, the team’s pitching depth has been obliterated thanks to injuries, as Yimi García, Alek Manoah and Jordan Romano are all on the 15-day Injured List, with the last two not pitching for a while.
It’s been a fairly rough season for the Blue Jays, but hopefully Bichette doesn’t have another stint on the Injured List.
