Ricky Tiedemann made his next step toward the Major League level. 

The 21-year-old left-handed pitcher made his Triple-A debut Friday night. Let’s see how the Blue Jays’ top prospect did in his first game with Buffalo.
Tiedemann had a pitch limit of 85, and he finished with a line of 4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. One of these strikeouts came against baseball’s best prospect, Jackson Holliday. Furthermore, the unearned run came on a strikeout, as there was a stolen base and a catcher’s error.

Unlike Double-A, Triple-A has Baseball Savant statistics, so let’s dig into that. Tiedemann generated 10 whiffs, a game-high, and also touched 97.6 mph with the heater. The 21-year-old averaged 95.1 mph on the fastball, throwing it 38 times. Moreover, Tiedemann got 15 swings on the pitch, while batters swung and missed twice.
The off-speed stuff was significantly better though. He threw 27 sliders, generating six swings and four misses for a 67 whiff %. Furthermore, the max spin rate on his breaking ball was 2761 RPM, with a 2613 RPM average.
His changeup was even better, as he only threw it 10 times, but had four whiffs on five swings for an 80 whiff%. In terms of spin rate, he has an average of 1976 RPM (which is normal for a changeup). You can see why scouts believe it is his best pitch, even with the mid-to-high-90’s fastball.
The next stop for the young left-handed pitch is the Arizona Fall League, as it was announced Friday afternoon.
