The Texas Rangers have come into Toronto and taken care of business.

They came into this four-game series with the Blue Jays behind them by a game-and-a-half in the standings. A 10-4 Texas win in the series opener on Monday brought them to within a half-game of Toronto and then the Rangers jumped the Blue Jays with a 6-3 win on Tuesday.

Winning the first two games of this set also gave Texas the season series win over Toronto, as the Blue Jays dropped two of three games against the Rangers earlier this season.

That’s important because if the Blue Jays and Rangers wind up with the same record at the end of the season, Texas has the tiebreaker between the two teams. So if both teams are tied after 162 games for the third wild card position, the Rangers would make the playoffs and the Blue Jays wouldn’t. There are no more Game 163s in Major League Baseball.

Going into the final two games of the series, the Rangers own a half-game lead over the Blue Jays in the standings, as the two teams both have 80 wins while Texas has one fewer losses than Toronto does. The Blue Jays will send Yusei Kikuchi and Kevin Gausman to the mound on Wednesday and Thursday in what are must-win games to salvage this series with the Rangers.
