The market is starting to pick up, and the Jays have reportedly offered lefty starter Andrew Heaney a contract.

The offer, as reported by Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, comes hours after the Mets landed Justin Verlander on a two-year deal. There’s been a connection between the Jays and Verlander for over a year now, but Toronto has their eyes on the second level of starters.

Details of the offer are not known.

Heaney is reported to have interest from up to 10 teams, Nicholson-Smith reported, so there’s far from a guarantee that anything happens.

The stuff for Heaney, however, has been good. He struck out 110 hitters in 72.2 innings last year for the Dodgers (13.6 K/9) with a 3.10 ERA, 3.75 FIP and 1.087 WHIP.

According to baseball savant, his percentile rates are strong with some good swing-and-miss. He struck out 35.5 percent of the batters he faced last season ranking He’s mainly a fastball pitcher averaging 93 MPH while throwing it 62 percent of the time. Also in his arsenal is a slider (83 MPH, 32%) and a changeup (85 MPH, 5%).

The 31-year-old, as noted by Nicholson-Smith, is coming off a one-year, $8.5-million deal, but MLB Trade Rumors is projecting a three-year, $42-million pact. This, however, could be on the low side.

The Jays clearly feel the need to add arms all over the roster after what was a tough 2022 season. The Yusei Kikuchi experiment was just that and blew up in their face and the team struggled out of the pen all year long.

Nicholson-Smith also reported the team doesn’t “appear to be at the forefront of the Chris Bassitt talks at this time,” but who knows what could happen.
