Paul Goldschmidt will sign a 1-year deal with the Yankees. The 37-year old has won 4 Gold Gloves and was the 2022 MVP. While he had a .716 OPS with 22 HRs & 65 RBI last year, he had solid numbers vs LHP and also performed better in the second half. Savvy, short-term signing.

The New York Yankees continue to make moves this off-season.
It was reported by Jack Curry of Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network that Paul Goldschmidt will sign a one-year, $12.5 million deal with the 2024 American League Pennant-winning team.
The future Hall of Famer is now 37 years old and is coming off the worst season of his career, where he slashed .245/.302/.414 with 22 home runs for a 100 wRC+ and a 1.1 fWAR with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was one of the best players on the planet in 2022, as he slashed .317/.404/.578 with 35 home runs in 651 plate appearances for a 175 wRC+ and a 6.8 fWAR.
For his career, Goldschmidt is slashing .289/.381/.510 with 362 home runs in 8,292 plate appearances for a 139 wRC+ and a 56.5 fWAR. He’s also a seven-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner at first base, has won the Silver Slugger five times, and was named the National League Most Valuable Player in 2022. It was the eighth consecutive season where he received MVP votes and the ninth time in 10 years.
With Goldschmidt locked down, the Yankees’ biggest need is now settled. It’s been a busy off-season for the 2024 American League Pennant-winners, as they lost Juan Soto in free agency and traded José Trevino and Nestor Cortes, but acquired Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, Devin Williams, and now Goldschmidt.
Signing Goldschmidt has a secondary effect as well, as the Yankees want to bring in his ex-teammate, Nolan Arenado. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, Mark Feinsand, and Bryan Hoch, the Cardinals declined a trade for Arenado earlier this off-season, as the Yankees offered former Toronto Blue Jay Marcus Stroman in return.
Now with the Yankees bringing in Arenado’s former teammate, the third baseman may be more willing to waive his no-trade clause, especially considering the Yankees went to the World Series last season. A few days ago, it was reported by Feinsand that Arenado declined to waive his No-Trade Clause for a trade that would’ve seen him go to the Houston Astros.
The Yankees have recovered well from losing Juan Soto and the Blue Jays need to make a big signing or two to keep up.
