The injury occurred on a safety squeeze bunt, and Mayza attempted to tag the runner coming home from third. He missed the ball and the base runner ran full speed, causing the dislocation.
If there’s a silver lining to this injury, it’s the fact that it happened on his non-pitching arm. If you recall, Mayza underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2019, so it’s a small relief that the injury occurred on his non-pitching arm.
This is a huge loss for the Blue Jays, as Mayza has been their go-to left-handed pitcher on the season. He posted a 2.41 ERA and a 3.56 FIP in his 33.2 innings pitched. The 52 left-handed batters he has faced are only hitting .146 off of Mayza this season.
Matt Gage and Tayler Saucedo are the two left-handers that could slot in for Mayza, as both of them are on the 40-man roster. Matt Peacock and Foster Griffin are two other lefties that may have a shot, but less likely. There&#8217;s an outside chance that Brandon Eisert gets the call up.
