Blue Jays 2026 40-man Roster Review: Spencer Miles has potential, but so few professional innings pitched

The Toronto Blue Jays bullpen has a ton of depth, but decisions will need to be made before Spring Training begins.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual 40-man roster review ahead of the new season. If you missed the most recent article, we looked at Tyler Heineman. In this article, we’ll look at Spencer Miles.
Barring injuries, there are just a handful of spots available in the Blue Jays bullpen. Jeff Hoffman, Yimi García, Tyler Rogers, and Louis Varland make up their high-leverage options. Brendon Little and Braydon Fisher have option years, but deserve a spot in the lineup. Things are complicated further by both Eric Lauer and José Berríos needing a spot. This doesn’t even mention a player like Mason Fluharty, who has an option year.
There are a handful of relievers who need to make the roster or the Jays risk losing them. Tommy Nance had a strong 2025 season, but is out of option years. Moreover, Miles and Angel Bastardo are two relievers the Jays selected in the Rule 5 draft over the last two seasons.
Since Bastardo missed the entirety of the 2025 season, the Rule 5 rules are a bit different. However, Miles has the tradition rules, he has to stick on the 26-man roster for the entirety of the season.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by the San Francisco Giants, Miles has pitched just 14.2 innings in affiliate ball since being drafted. In 2022, he had a 3.68 ERA and 3.92 FIP in 7.1 innings pitched. After missing the entirety of the 2023 season, Miles had a 4.91 ERA and 2.79 FIP in 7.1 innings pitched. Miles missed the 2023 season due to back surgery and received Tommy John surgery in the summer of 2024, missing all of the 2025 season.
Well, sort of. Miles was healthy at the end of the season so the Giants sent him to the Arizona Fall League. Over eight and two-thirds innings, Miles had a 4.15 ERA, with a 32.4 K% and 2.7 BB%. His fastball during the AFL sat 95.3 mph, and he threw a four-seamer, two-seamer, changeup, cutter, and curve.
It’s easy to see what the Blue Jays like about the 25-year-old right-handed pitcher, he has great stuff. That said injuries have limited him to just a handful of games since turning professional in 2022. Add in the fact the Jays need to keep him on the 26-man roster, and it’s hard to see Miles not being sent back to the Giants.
