The Toronto Blue Jays had a hybrid trade deadline.
With the team playing better, but still far out from a playoff spot, the Blue Jays traded a handful of players on expiring contracts. The first player to be traded was fan favourite Kevin Gausman, who was dealt to the Chicago Cubs on August 2nd. In return, the Blue Jays acquired Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene.
It’s the latter that ranks as our 33rd-best Blue Jays’ prospect in the mid-season top 40 prospect list. If you missed our 34th-best prospect, you can read about Ryan Cooney here.

Southisene is the younger prospect of Atlanta Braves prospect Tate Southisene, who ranks as MLB Pipeline’s 60th-best prospect in baseball. The Blue Jays’ prospect doesn’t quite have the tools that his younger brother has, showcasing limited power early in his professional career.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 draft by the Cubs, the Nevada native made his professional debut in 2025. All but four of his plate appearances came with the Cubs’ Single-A team, where Southisene slashed .244/.387/.276 with six doubles and two triples. He finished with a 114 wRC+, while posting a higher BB% (15.9%) than K% (14.9%).
Beginning his 2026 season with the Cubs’ High-A team yet again, the middle infielder slashed .267/.373/.372 with three doubles and three triple overs 105 plate appearances, good for a 111 wRC+. He earned a promotion to the Cubs’ High-A team, where he slashed .326/.451/.372 with four doubles and two triples in 213 plate appearances.
Southisene joined the High-A Vancouver Canadians after the trade, making his debut on August 5th. It took him just three games in the Jays’ organization to do something he was unable to do in the Cubs organization: hit a home run.
Over 50 plate appearances with the C’s, Southisene is slashing .262/.380/.429 for a 119 wRC+. It’s also the first time in his professional career at any level where his K% (16%) is higher than his BB% (12%). Southisene is currently on the 7-day injured list.
The 21-year-old ranks as MLB Pipeline’s 20th-best Blue Jays’ prospect. His lack of power is a big concern, graded at 20 in their mid-season update. While the Blue Jays found a way to get some pop out of Dub Gleed, who had just two professional home runs before being traded north of the border, Southisene stands at just 5 ‘7”, 170 lbs. There’s very little projection in his bat.
Other than power, Southisene grades out as an average prospect. His lone above-average tool is his 55 grade speed, while his hit tool, arm, and fielding ability sit at 50. There’s still a pathway to becoming a big league player, but he has to get the ball off the ground and excel defensively.
