The Toronto Blue Jays just can’t seem to notch their second no-hitter in franchise history.
On Wednesday afternoon, Dylan Cease carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth, only for it to be broken up by Heliot Ramos to lead-off the inning. It’s now been 13,093 days since a Blue Jays’ pitcher threw a no-hitter, with Dave Stieb doing it all the way back on September 2nd, 1990.
Still, it was a terrific outing for Cease, who went 8+ innings of work, giving up one hit, no earned runs, three walks, and striking out 11. Cease totalled 118 pitches, the most he has ever thrown in his career, as well as the most pitches thrown by any pitcher in a game this season.
His previous high of 114 was on July 25th, 2024, the day of his first and only no-hitter he’s thrown. Cease also threw a no-hitter into the ninth inning before during his Chicago White Sox days.
With the All-Star break on the horizon, he should be well rested for his next start. However, Cease is also set to attend the All-Star Game, and with John Schneider managing the American League, Cease may have done enough to earn the start.
There’s been plenty of close calls over the years. Bowden Francis pitched a no-hitter into the ninth inning in a span of four starts late in 2024 season, only for it to be broken up twice. One of his other outings in that span also saw him carry one into the sixth inning.
This was Cease’s second great start in a row, going seven scoreless outings against the Seattle Mariners on Friday. He only allowed three hits in that game, striking out nine and surrendering just one walk. That said, the Blue Jays offence did more than enough, scoring 10 runs and hitting three home runs.
