The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to salvage something from what has been a brutal series so far.

On Monday, José Soriano carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh against the Detroit Tigers, but the Jays eventually lose that game 6-5 after several defensive errors. Turning to a bullpen game on Tuesday, they never really had a chance to win it, as Michael Lorenzen gave up five earned runs in a 10-1 loss.

Entering play on Wednesday, the Blue Jays are now two games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild card spot with just 10 to play. Moreover, they’ll need to jump the Texas Rangers, who defeated the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday evening. It’s not quite a must-win game, but there’s next to no room for error.

Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer makes the start for the Blue Jays. Last time out, the former Tiger allowed six earned runs over five innings of work, ending a solid stretch of baseball since coming off the injured list. From July 27th until August 30th, Scherzer had a 3.60 ERA and 3.67 FIP in 35 innings of work, with half of the 14 earned runs coming in one outing. The Blue Jays need that Scherzer on Wednesday afternoon.

Starting for the Tigers is 26-year-old righty Keider Montero. Over 30 outings where he’s made 24 starts, he has a career-best 3.55 ERA and 4.09 FIP in 147 innings, though his K% only sits at 16.5%. He’s pitched against the Blue Jays twice in his career, giving up 10 earned runs (11 total) in nine and one-third innings.

Despite a righty on the mound, the Blue Jays will have more right-handed batters than left-handed batters in the lineup. Brett Bateman leads off, followed by Nathan Lukes. Josh Smith, batting sixth, is the only other lefty in the lineup, while the switch-hitting Brandon Valenzuela bats eight and catches Scherzer.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats third, George Springer bats clean, Kazuma Okamoto bats sixth, Ernie Clement bats seventh, and Myles Straw plays left field and is batting ninth.
