After a wild finish to Friday night’s game in Philadelphia, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking for another series win.

Up 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Philadelphia Phillies threatened, but the Jays managed to hold on for a 5-4 victory on Friday evening. Fresh faces powered the Jays to the victory, as Brett Bateman wasted no time getting his first MLB hit, sending the first pitch he saw in his first at-bat off Zack Wheeler to left field for a double. Josh Smith added some insurance late with a solo home run, his first extra-base hit with the Jays.

José Soriano made his Blue Jays debut after not pitching in almost two weeks. The starter showed no rust by recording 18 whiffs and three strikeouts, allowing just one run over 4.2 innings of work. He’ll look to improve upon his command next time out, having walked three batters in this outing. Soriano has always had great stuff, but has historically struggled with being around the zone enough to get batters to chase his exceptional off-speed pitches.

On the offensive side of things, Andrés Giménez hit a solo home run off Zack Wheeler and Alejandro Kirk knocked in a pair of runs. Nathan Lukes worked Wheeler to a 15-pitch at-bat that resulted in a single that brought Kirk to the plate. It was an impressive showing by the Blue Jays offence against one of the game’s best.

Lázaro Estrada picked up the win, working 1.1 scoreless innings, with newly acquired knuckleballer Matt Waldron collecting a hold in his Jays debut. Tyler Rogers got the ninth inning for the potential save, and though he was uncharacteristically wild, he got the job done.

The Jays sit seven games back of .500 with a 55-62 record, still in last place in the American League East and three and a half games back of the final Wild Card spot. They’ll go for their fourth series win since July 27th, having beaten the Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Astros, with a single game loss mixed in to the Chicago Cubs.

Max Scherzer is coming off one of his best starts of the season for the Blue Jays, completing six innings against the Cardinals where he allowed one earned run and struck out five. It has been without a doubt a tough season for the now 42-year-old, posting an ERA just shy of eight and a WHIP of 1.63. The last time the veteran right-hander faced the Phillies was on June 10th, giving up five runs and two home runs over just 3.1 innings of work, and will look for better results this time around.
