The Toronto Blue Jays have the chance to have a finish the road trip with a winning record.
After taking two of three from the Detroit Tigers over the weekend, the Blue Jays lost the first two games in their four-game set against the New York Yankees. Wednesday’s game was an eventful one, featuring a lengthy pre-game rain delay and a pitcher’s duel. In the end, Trey Yesavage was better than Cam Schlittler, and the Jays squeaked out a 2-1 victory.
Coming into this series, the Blue Jays had only lost two series in their last eight, dropping both series they played against the Tampa Bay Rays in that span. With a win on Thursday evening, they can earn a series split and go 4-3 on the road trip.
The series finale will be a bullpen day for the Blue Jays, with Braydon Fisher starting the game. Spencer Miles is expected to pitch the bulk of the innings as he’s done the last two bullpen days. In those two outings, Miles has pitched six and two-thirds scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Starting for the Yankees is Carlos Rodón, who has made just two other starts so far this season. As good as he’s been the past two seasons, the Blue Jays have always found success against the left-handed pitcher. In his 47.2 innings against the Blue Jays, Rodón has a 4.72 ERA. Last season, he made two starts and allowed six runs, four earned, in 10 innings of work. The Jays also scored six earned runs off Rodón in two and one-third innings in Game 3 of the ALDS.
With a lefty on the mound, the Blue Jays only have one left-handed pitcher in the lineup. Daulton Varsho is batting third and is slashing .362/.422/.517 with a home run in 64 plate appearances since May 3rd. Interestingly, Varsho has held his own against LHP this season, slashing .256/.347/.472 with a home run in 49 plate appearances.
George Springer leads off and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits second once again. Following Varsho, Kazuma Okamoto hits clean up, Ernie Clement hits fifth, and Lenyn Sosa hits sixth. The bottom third of the Blue Jays’ lineup consists of Myles Straw batting seventh, Brandon Valenzuela batting eighth, and Davis Schneider batting ninth.
